Gundolsheim
WELCOME IN GUNDOLSHEIM
Gundolsheim first appears in the 8th century. The village belonged to the Duke of Alsace. A fortification probably surrounded the village. Vestige of an old gate of the village is situated between the houses number 13 and 14 in the rue de Merxheim. Two noble families owned each a castle from the 13th century, but nowadays there is no trace of it anymore. The bell tower recalls the origin of the village in the early Middle Ages. The early church and the cemetery were surrounded by a fortification. The present bell tower was built in the 12th century. The massive lower part is pierced by loopholes. Two floors form the upper part where we can see twin windows, small columns and cubic capitals. The present spire was built several centuries after.
