Museum of the Bladed Weapon Factory of Klingenthal

Klingenthal

Museum of the former royal and imperial bladed weapon factory of Klingenthal, founded under Louis XV in 1730 and active until 1962.

The museum presents the bladed weapons trades, such as forging, sharpening, polishing, engraving, and more, as well as a large collection of sabres, swords, armour and tools.

The museum blacksmith's shop operates every first Sunday of the month, for public demonstrations.

This Museum delves into the history of the first French sword and blade manufacturing company, established in 1730 by King Louis XV. In 1830, the Company started making scythes but continued to make blades, such as the bayonet fixed to the Chassepot rifle. Illustrations, old photographs and documents relate this history. The Museum is also a teaching museum: the visitor learns how the blades were made, from the foundry to the beautifully engraved finished product. He can see the model of a tilt hammer, a forge and original tools. Different types of blades, swords, foils, daggers, bayonnets, scythes… are displayed.
